Founded in 2009 by oncologist Dr Henry Mannings, who was frustrated with the limited care he could give patients at the hospital and with the general ineffectiveness and toxicity of standard line treatments, Star Throwers is a charity dedicated to providing holistic advice and support to cancer patients and their families, with a research focus on non-toxic cancer treatments.
We offer consultations for patients looking to understand their cancer and treatment options, including the scientific evidence and rationale behind them. In certain cases, they may also receive immunotherapy which is the primary focus of our research. As well as these, both patients and carers have access to wellbeing therapies such as massage and yoga classes.
Patients are not charged for any of their services, except in certain circumstances. With Together Against Cancer’s support, we will be able to continue our work at no cost to patients and in future it will enable us to cater to more of their needs through new services and equipment.
Why the name ‘Star Throwers’?
The name is based on a short story by Loren Eiseley: After a heavy storm, a boy walked along the beach throwing stranded starfish back into the sea. A man watching shouted, “There are too many of them, it won’t make a difference.” As the boy threw another starfish back into the sea, he smiled and replied “It made a difference to that one.” Star Throwers – Caring for those affected by Cancer
